BYD Song Plus EV in detail

After the Champion Edition update, the BYD Song Plus EV moved from the restrained Dynasty family styling to the more distinctive Ocean Face design. It is a midsize, front-wheel-drive electric crossover with five seats, two Blade Battery options and equipment focused primarily on comfortable everyday travel.

The Chinese range consists of the 520KM and 605KM versions. These names refer to the CLTC driving cycle and should not be treated as real-world figures for Ukrainian roads. For comparison, related European configurations with 71.8 and 87 kWh batteries are rated at approximately 420 and 500 km under WLTP.

Design and positioning

The main visual change of the Champion Edition is at the front. In place of the previous Song Plus treatment, the model received a closed Ocean X Face, U-shaped headlights and cleaner bumper lines. This makes the electric version easier to distinguish from the Song Plus DM-i plug-in hybrid, although their profiles and rear sections remain similar.

With a length of 4,775 mm and a 2,765 mm wheelbase, the Song Plus EV sits between compact urban crossovers and larger family SUVs. Its 1,890 mm width provides useful cabin space but should be considered in narrow parking areas. Ground clearance is approximately 180 mm unladen and 150 mm at full load. That is suitable for urban use and ordinary unpaved roads, not serious off-road driving.

Standard 19-inch wheels with 235/50 R19 tyres suit the body proportions. Practical features include roof rails, a panoramic roof and a powered tailgate on better-equipped versions. Conventional door handles are also easier to use in winter than retractable mechanisms.

Interior and technology

The cabin is organised around a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a rotating central touchscreen. Some versions use a 12.8-inch screen, while higher export specifications may have a larger display and an Infinity audio system. Anyone buying a Chinese-market car should verify its exact specification by VIN rather than relying only on listing photographs.

The 2,765 mm wheelbase provides useful second-row space. The rear backrest can be adjusted for angle, while split folding makes it easier to carry long items. The related export model officially offers 552 litres of luggage capacity and up to 1,440 litres with the second row folded.

Equipment varies by grade. Entry versions may already include dual-zone climate control, a panoramic roof, a 360-degree camera and powered adjustment for the driver’s seat. Higher specifications add heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, multi-colour ambient lighting and a broader driver-assistance package. Regional software, connected services and interface languages should be checked before purchase because a Chinese-market car may not support the same functions as an official export vehicle.

Charging and driving range

The 520KM version uses a 71.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery. Its motor produces 150 kW and 310 Nm, while its claimed range is 520 km under CLTC. The closely related European configuration is officially rated at about 420 km WLTP. Actual distance depends on speed, temperature, cabin heating and driving style.

The 605KM version has an 87.04 kWh battery, a 160 kW motor and 330 Nm. Its official 605 km CLTC figure corresponds to approximately 500 km WLTP for the related European specification. This version is better suited to frequent intercity travel, although the larger battery adds weight and increases the time required for a full charge.

Chinese Song Plus EVs use a GB/T charging port. Buyers should plan home charging and compatibility with Ukrainian public stations in advance. Fast-charging power depends on the battery, market and version: official figures for the 71.8 kWh battery range from 90 to 115 kW, while the larger related configuration accepts up to 140 kW. A heat pump, battery heating and active temperature management help in winter but cannot eliminate the seasonal loss of range.

The V2L function can supply external electrical equipment with up to 3.3 kW through a compatible adapter. It can be useful when travelling, at a country house or as backup power for smaller devices.

Performance and handling

The Song Plus EV is not intended to be a sports crossover. Front-wheel drive, progressive motor response and a MacPherson front suspension with a multi-link rear layout are aimed at predictable everyday driving. Top speed is limited to 175 km/h. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes about 9.3 seconds in the smaller-battery version and approximately 9.6 seconds in the heavier long-range model.

This performance is sufficient for city traffic, overtaking and relaxed motorway use. Because the front wheels handle both steering and traction, they have less grip in reserve during a hard launch on a slippery surface than a rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive layout. Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow modes alter powertrain response but do not turn this family crossover into an off-road vehicle.

The vehicle’s weight can be felt during rapid changes of direction, although the low-mounted battery contributes to stability. Ventilated front discs, rear disc brakes and regenerative braking suit the car’s comfort-oriented character.

Advantages of the BYD Song Plus EV

1. Two useful battery choices.
The 71.8 kWh version suits everyday routes, while the 87.04 kWh battery provides a larger reserve for motorway travel.
2. Spacious second row.
The 2,765 mm wheelbase and adjustable rear backrest make the crossover practical for family trips.
3. LFP Blade Battery.
The cathode does not use nickel or cobalt and the battery is designed for stable daily operation.
4. Heat pump and battery heating.
Thermal management reduces winter inconvenience compared with simpler EVs without this equipment.
5. Useful cabin equipment.
A panoramic roof, surround-view cameras, climate control and comfortable front seats are available depending on grade.
6. V2L capability.
The vehicle can power external devices at up to 3.3 kW through a compatible adapter.

Disadvantages of the BYD Song Plus EV

1. Chinese GB/T charging port.
Ukrainian charging infrastructure may require an adapter or a specifically selected home charger.
2. Optimistic CLTC ratings.
The 520KM and 605KM names do not represent real range at motorway speed or in winter.
3. Moderate performance.
Acceleration in roughly nine and a half seconds suits a family vehicle but not buyers expecting a fast EV.
4. Front-wheel drive only.
There is no all-wheel-drive version in this technical range.
5. Regional differences.
Charging power, multimedia, assistance systems and warranty support depend on the origin of the specific vehicle.
6. Confusing model names.
The Song Plus EV, European Seal U and plug-in hybrid DM-i look similar but use different powertrains and charging standards.

The BYD Song Plus EV suits buyers who need a spacious electric crossover with comfort equipment, predictable performance and a large LFP battery. Before ordering a Chinese-market car, check the charging port, multimedia language, mobile app functionality, driver-assistance equipment and actual warranty terms.

The 520KM version is the more rational choice for urban and suburban use with regular home charging. The 605KM version can justify its higher price for frequent intercity journeys or for drivers who want to connect to a charger less often. In both cases, choose by battery capacity and equipment rather than the trim name alone.
