Zeekr 001 in detail

The European specification Zeekr 001 went on sale in 2023. It is a large electric shooting brake that approaches executive car dimensions while retaining the practicality of a five door estate. Its competitors include the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo and similarly priced premium electric SUVs. It is important to distinguish the European 001 from later Chinese updates. Cars built for Europe have a 100 kWh battery, a CCS2 charging port, a 400 V electrical system and a peak charging rate of 200 kW. Newer Chinese versions with 800 or 900 V systems received different batteries, motors and electronics.

The shape of the Zeekr 001 places it somewhere between an estate, a hatchback and a low SUV. Its long bonnet, flowing roofline and substantial rear section make the car appear lower than it really is. Frameless doors, flush handles and broad rear wheel arches support the sporting appearance, but the body does not sacrifice rear seat space for its silhouette. The car is 4955 mm long and 1560 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2999 mm. Width including the mirrors is 2225 mm, so the 001 requires more care in tight car parks than a conventional family estate. The boot holds 539 litres. That is enough for large suitcases or a pushchair, although the sloping rear glass limits the height of bulky cargo.

The wheelbase is almost three metres long, which creates a spacious second row. Passengers have generous knee room, while the flat floor makes the centre seat easier to use. The front seats are positioned relatively high, giving the driver a seating position closer to an SUV than a traditional estate. The large glass area helps visibility, although the rear pillars remain substantial. Most functions are controlled through a 14.6 inch central display. A compact 8.8 inch instrument panel sits in front of the driver, while the head up display creates a 24.3 inch projection area. There are relatively few physical buttons, so the climate system, driving modes and some assistance settings are operated through the touchscreen. This keeps the dashboard uncluttered, but certain adjustments demand more attention while driving.

Equipment depends on the version. Long Range RWD and Performance AWD have an eight speaker audio system. Privilege AWD adds a 12 speaker Yamaha system with a subwoofer, ventilated and massaging front seats, and upgraded interior trim. On a car imported from another country, buyers should separately confirm whether the mobile app, navigation, remote functions and wireless updates operate correctly.

Charging, range and battery

All three European versions use a traction battery with a nominal capacity of 100 kWh. Long Range RWD offers the greatest range at up to 620 km on the WLTP cycle. The dual motor Performance AWD can travel up to 594 km, while the heavier Privilege AWD with air suspension and additional equipment is rated at up to 585 km WLTP. Peak DC rapid charging power is 200 kW. At a suitable battery temperature, charging from 10 to 80% takes about 30 minutes. This is an acceptable result for journeys across Ukraine, although newer Zeekr models with 800 V systems charge noticeably faster. Actual charging speed also depends on the charger, battery temperature and state of charge.

One strong point is the 22 kW onboard AC charger. A suitable three phase charging point can fully charge the battery in about 5.5 hours. This is useful at home or at the office when the electrical connection can actually supply that power. A conventional 7 or 11 kW wallbox will require considerably more time. In cold weather, real range will be lower than the WLTP figures, especially on motorways. The high kerb weight, all wheel drive and 22 inch wheels also increase energy consumption. If long distance travel is the priority, Long Range RWD is the more rational option. The all wheel drive versions trade some efficiency for traction and quicker acceleration.

Performance and handling

The Zeekr 001 Long Range RWD has one rear electric motor producing 200 kW, or 272 hp. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. This is sufficient for relaxed everyday driving, while the absence of a front motor helps it achieve the longest range in the line up. This version best matches the character of a large electric grand tourer.
Performance AWD and Privilege AWD use two motors with a combined output of 400 kW, or 544 hp. Torque is 686 Nm and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.8 seconds. The all wheel drive system can quickly redistribute power between the axles, which is useful on wet roads and in winter. High power cannot disguise the car’s mass, however, as even the rear wheel drive version weighs more than 2.2 tonnes.
There is an important difference between the two all wheel drive trims. Performance AWD uses conventional coil springs, while Privilege AWD has an active air suspension system with adjustable ride height. Air suspension better suits the mass and touring character of the 001, but it also adds complexity and potentially expensive components once the warranty expires. The condition of the wheels, tyres and suspension deserves particular attention on cars fitted with large wheels.

Zeekr 001 disadvantages

1. Considerable weight.
Even Long Range RWD weighs about 2275 kg, affecting inertia and tyre wear.
2. Wide body.
A width of 2225 mm including the mirrors makes narrow passages and parking more difficult.
3. No longer the fastest charging Zeekr.
The 400 V system and 200 kW limit fall behind newer models from the brand.
4. Reliance on the touchscreen.
Some everyday settings require the driver to open menus in the infotainment system.
5. Air suspension only on the top version.
Performance AWD has the same power but does not include adjustable ride height.
6. Regional limitations for digital services.
App, navigation and update compatibility should be checked on the individual car.

The Zeekr 001 is a very spacious electric car with a substantial driving range. It suits buyers who need a large vehicle but do not like the format of a tall SUV. It is well suited to long journeys, offers a useful boot and comes with generous equipment. For mostly urban use, its dimensions, weight and reliance on touchscreen controls may be excessive. Long Range RWD is the most rational option for long distance driving. Performance AWD adds much stronger acceleration and all wheel drive while retaining coil spring suspension. Privilege AWD focuses on maximum comfort with air suspension, massaging seats and a Yamaha audio system. Before buying one in Ukraine, check that the car is a genuine European specification model with a CCS2 port, and verify its service history and warranty support.
