BMW i5 Sedan G60 in detail

The BMW i5 Sedan G60 is the electric version of the eighth generation of the 5 Series sedan, one of the Bavarian brand’s bestsellers. The car shares its body with petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid versions, but receives a traction battery under the floor and BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive powertrain. For Europe, the rear-wheel-drive eDrive40, all-wheel-drive xDrive40, and sporty M60 xDrive are offered.

After the scheduled technical update in March 2025, the electric 5 Series became more efficient. Changes to the power electronics, wheel bearings, and tires reduced energy consumption, while new 19-inch aerodynamic wheels helped increase the range. For Ukraine, it is important to look specifically for a European car with a CCS2 port, which is compatible with local charging stations without American adapters.

Design of the electric 5 Series

In terms of size, the i5 has already come close to executive sedans of previous generations. The length is 5060 mm, the width is 1900 mm, and the wheelbase reaches 2995 mm. The large body provides enough space for rear-seat passengers, but requires attention in tight parking spaces. Optional Integral Active Steering with rear-wheel steering partly compensates for the size and reduces the turning diameter.

The electric version can be recognized by the closed plastic sections of BMW’s kidney grille, blue decorative elements, and aerodynamic wheels, although many details depend on the selected package. The M60 receives more aggressive bumpers, sport wheels, different trim, and the illuminated Iconic Glow grille outline. This decoration improves visual positioning, but large wheels and wide tires reduce the driving range.

The i5 has retained BMW’s classic proportions with a long hood and a cabin shifted rearward. The layout does not provide a front trunk, as the space under the hood is occupied by power electronics, climate-control equipment, and other components. The main trunk holds 490 liters. This is an acceptable figure for a sedan, but some competitors on dedicated electric platforms offer an additional front compartment.

Interior and technology

The front panel is built around the curved BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central display. The interface supports navigation with charging-stop planning, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, voice control, and My Modes settings. The iDrive controller on the center console remains, so the main functions do not necessarily have to be accessed only through touchscreen inputs.

Climate settings have mostly been moved to the display. A permanent lower panel makes temperature access easier, but changing some parameters requires opening an additional menu. It looks clean, although physical buttons would be more convenient on rough roads or in winter while wearing gloves.

The almost three-meter wheelbase provides enough legroom in the second row. At the same time, the battery under the floor slightly raises the passengers’ foot position compared with the regular 5 Series. The front seats have a wide range of adjustments, while the optional comfort seats are better suited for long routes than sport seats with pronounced side support.

The list of assistance systems depends on the trim. Driving Assistant Professional can maintain distance, speed, and lane position, while Parking Assistant Professional can memorize a maneuver and reproduce it automatically. Before buying a car in Ukraine, it is worth checking the installed packages by VIN, because i5 models that look similar from the outside can differ significantly in cameras, head-up display, audio system, and parking functions.

Charging and range

All three BMW i5 versions have a battery with 81.2 kWh of usable capacity and a 400-volt architecture. The most efficient version is the eDrive40. BMW claims between 512 and 627 km WLTP for it, depending on wheels and equipment. The xDrive40, with an additional front motor, covers between 486 and 580 km, while the M60 xDrive has a range of 472 to 540 km WLTP.

The upper limit should not be taken as a guaranteed real-world range. Large wheels, low temperature, short winter trips, highway speeds, and active heating increase consumption. For the Ukrainian winter, cabin and battery preconditioning while connected to the grid is useful, as is route planning through the built-in navigation. It can prepare the battery before a fast-charging station.

The maximum DC charging power is 205 kW. Under favorable conditions, the battery charges from 10 to 80% in about 30 minutes. The eDrive40 can add 157 to 211 km of calculated range in 10 minutes, the xDrive40 gains 148 to 181 km, and the M60 gains 145 to 174 km. The result depends on the initial state of charge, battery temperature, and the actual power of the station. The standard three-phase 11 kW AC module charges the battery in about 8 hours and 30 minutes. The optional 22 kW system shortens the time to 4 hours and 15 minutes, if the home or public connection actually provides such power. For an owner in Ukraine, this is a practical option, but before installing a home charging station it is necessary to check the permitted power of the property and the capabilities of the electrical grid.

Performance

The rear-wheel-drive eDrive40 develops up to 340 hp in Sport mode and 430 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 6 seconds, and the top speed is limited to 193 km/h. This is the most balanced version for everyday use. It is lighter than the all-wheel-drive versions, consumes less energy, and preserves BMW’s characteristic rear-axle response.

The xDrive40 adds a front motor and produces 394 hp and 590 Nm. Acceleration to 100 km/h is reduced to 5.4 seconds, and the top speed rises to 215 km/h. All-wheel drive is useful on wet asphalt, snowy roads, and during hard acceleration, but it increases weight and consumption. For the Ukrainian climate, this version makes practical sense if the car regularly drives outside the city in winter.

The sporty M60 xDrive produces up to 601 hp when M Sport Boost or Launch Control is activated and accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The top speed is 230 km/h. The sport version receives Adaptive Suspension Professional, active rear-wheel steering, and more powerful brakes. It controls the heavy body better in fast corners, but remains a massive road sedan rather than a light track car.

All versions have rear air suspension that automatically maintains body height under load. Electronically controlled dampers depend on the trim. On 19-inch wheels, the i5 isolates the cabin better from sharp road imperfections, which is especially important on Ukrainian roads. Large M wheels make responses more precise, but increase tire noise and the risk of damaging low-profile rubber.

Cons of the BMW i5 Sedan G60

  • 1. Significant curb weight. Even the base electric version weighs more than two tons, which can be felt during braking and quick direction changes.
  • 2. No front trunk. Charging cables have to be stored in the main 490-liter compartment.
  • 3. Range depends on the configuration. Large wheels and additional equipment noticeably move real results away from the maximum WLTP figure.
  • 4. Only 400-volt architecture. The 205 kW peak is below the capabilities of some competitors with modern 800-volt systems.
  • 5. Much of the equipment is offered in packages. Assistants, comfort seats, active steering, and the 22 kW charging module must be checked in the specific car.
  • 6. Large exterior dimensions. A body longer than 5 meters makes parking more difficult in old courtyards and tight underground parking lots.

The BMW i5 Sedan G60 is a good option if you like BMW but want to keep the German comfort, seating position, and handling of a business sedan while switching to an electric powertrain. The model is especially appropriate if home or workplace charging is available. Buyers who need a compact car, a large front trunk, or the fastest highway charging should compare the i5 with models built on dedicated 800-volt platforms.

For most owners, the eDrive40 will be the most rational option thanks to its range and sufficient performance. The xDrive40 is better suited to regular winter trips and routes with unstable road surfaces. The M60 is worth choosing for acceleration, the sport chassis, and M equipment, while understanding that these advantages come with greater weight, more expensive tires, and a shorter range between charges.
