BMW iX3 G08 in detail

The BMW iX3 is one of the Bavarians’ first experiments in creating an electric version of the midsize X3 crossover. After the update/LCI, the model received a standard M Sport package, more modern lighting, and a fresher interior, but kept the familiar body and practicality of the regular X3.

Technically, the iX3 stands apart from most powerful electric SUVs: it has only one motor, rear-wheel drive, and a battery without chasing record-breaking capacity. This approach resulted in moderate energy consumption and natural steering responses, although the buyer will have to accept the absence of an all-wheel-drive version.

Design and positioning

The electric version is easy to recognize by the closed grille sections, blue accents, and aerodynamic wheels. The facelifted G08 has narrow LED headlights, more expressive taillights, and the M Sport package as standard equipment. The standard 19-inch wheels are more suitable for range and comfort, while the 20-inch wheels from the Impressive version add more visual impact.

In terms of dimensions, the iX3 repeats the regular X3: 4734 mm in length and 2864 mm between the axles. This makes the transition from a conventional crossover easier, but the platform was not designed exclusively for electric cars. Because of this, there is no additional front trunk under the hood, and the cabin still has a central tunnel. The main luggage compartment, however, is fully family-friendly: 510 liters with the seatbacks up and 1560 liters with them folded.

Interior and technology

The dashboard resembles other BMW models of the G generation, and for many people this is an advantage. The driver gets a separate 12.3-inch instrument panel, a central display of the same size, the rotary iDrive controller, and physical climate-control buttons. The main functions are not hidden in a multi-level touchscreen menu, so they are easier to use while driving.

The seating position is high, the adjustment ranges are wide, and the rear row is suitable for adult passengers. At the same time, the middle seat is limited by the transmission tunnel — a legacy of the universal platform. A panoramic roof, power-adjustable front seats, three-zone climate control, and adaptive suspension were included in the Inspiring package. The Impressive version added Vernasca leather, a head-up display, Harman Kardon audio, acoustic glass, and an expanded parking assistant.

The architecture no longer feels like the newest one compared with electric vehicles that have flat floors. On the other hand, it has proper door pockets, a clear interface, and a correctly shaped trunk.

Charging and range

The traction battery has 80 kWh of gross capacity and about 74 kWh of usable capacity. The official range of the facelifted model is 453–461 km according to the WLTP cycle, depending on wheels and equipment. The EV Database estimate for mixed real-world conditions is about 385 km. On a cold high-speed highway, it can drop to around 275 km, so the official figure should not be applied to a winter trip without adjustments.

Through a three-phase charging station, the car accepts up to 11 kW of alternating current, and a full charge takes about 7.5 hours. At a fast DC station, up to 150 kW is available; charging from 0 to 80% takes approximately 34 minutes when the battery temperature is favorable. BMW also claimed about 100 km of additional WLTP range in ten minutes.

The peak power of 150 kW looks more adequate than high. For home charging this does not matter, but on long highway trips newer 800-volt competitors spend less time at the charging terminal.

Performance and handling

The synchronous electric motor produces 210 kW (286 hp) and 400 Nm and drives the rear wheels. Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 6.8 seconds, which does not seem like much compared with modern electric cars, and the top speed is limited to 180 km/h. This is not a showy electric launch, but there is enough torque for overtaking, and the absence of a second motor significantly reduces energy consumption.

The rear-wheel-drive BMW layout leaves the front wheels responsible for the direction of travel, so the steering has Bavarian habits and responses — believe me, this is much cooler than in most heavy all-wheel-drive Chinese electric cars. The adaptive suspension controls the body, but the curb weight of about 2.26 tons does not disappear: on uneven roads and during sharp direction changes, the mass is noticeable, as they say, “you can’t cheat physics.”

Pros of the BMW iX3

  • 1. Efficient and economical motor. Moderate consumption allows the car to achieve good range from 74 kWh of usable capacity.
  • 2. Familiar interior for BMW fans. iDrive, physical buttons, and separate displays require no getting used to; everything is where you expect it to be.
  • 3. Trunk. The 510–1560-liter volume is suitable for long family trips to the sea.
  • 4. BMW-style handling. Rear-wheel drive adds clean steering responses.
  • 5. Generous equipment. Even Inspiring includes a panoramic roof, adaptive suspension, and three-zone climate control.

Cons of the BMW iX3

  • 1. No all-wheel drive. No alternative to the rear-wheel-drive layout was offered for the G08.
  • 2. Not a dedicated EV platform. The central tunnel and the lack of a front trunk take away some potential practicality.
  • 3. Low charging speed. A maximum of 150 kW still falls behind competitors.
  • 4. Significant weight. About 2.26 tons can be felt on uneven roads and during sharp maneuvers.
  • 5. Large wheels. The 20-inch set may worsen comfort and range.

The BMW iX3 is suitable for someone who wants a quiet electric crossover without a radically new “electric design” and values handling and a practical trunk. For regular winter off-road trips, all-wheel drive is needed, and for frequent long-distance routes it is more logical to look for a model with a faster charging system. Both trims are mostly visual and have the same motor, battery, and rear-wheel drive. Inspiring is the more rational purchase, especially on 19-inch wheels. Impressive is worth paying extra for because of the head-up display, better audio system, trim, and parking features, but it does not provide any technical advantage or longer range — only visual and comfort upgrades.
